Water Systems Chess Set
INSPIRATION

The dream for these pieces came from both my desire for modern sleekness and visual interest. As well as a unique and original avenue for a marketable chess set. This led me to seek inspiration in cylindrical shapes such as piping and trees, as well as the usage of aluminum for a clean finish
IDEATION
Concept sketching began with a large variety of ideas, tackling the difficulties of form and functionality

The final two iterations were chosen from their best sense of visual hierarchy, and visual complexion/interest
PROTOTYPING
My decision was to go with the "water works" concept. After constructing the first prototype models out of clay to determine scale and proportions, I moved to 3D modeling to get a more defined shape

The models were constructed in Fusion 360, giving me a general basis of what to go off of. This also gave me a full scale representation as inspiration for the final pieces
CONSTRUCTION
Using aluminum sheet metal, and aluminum modeling wire, the components for each piece were measured, cut, and loosely assembled to ensure the scale was consistent

The 3D model was also updated at this time, adding the materials for both player's sets and a board to display the pieces on
The pieces were assembled and sealed together with industrial grade super-glue, as welding would have been dangerous with the scale and thinness of the pieces

SHOWCASE
The final models were constructed with great success, and the render turned out beautifully. The concept was complete and ready for presentation!
