Taste of MADE Award Placard

INSPIRATION

A yearly tradition of honoring local businesses was arriving, and as was part of the Mason Deerfield Chamber duties, an award was to be made, to hand out to the given winners of the competition. I was approached by the chamber, seeking my input on a award for these business owners

IDEATION

Previous year's awards were all constructed by other members of the community, providing a lot of inspiration for my design, but also a unique challenge to create something new and original

After much ideation, I decided to lean towards a placard shape, clearly outlining the honor of the award within the trophy. This shape also allowed me to be more machine-precise with the design, creating a sense of modern sleekness and repeatability, over a cheap handmade craft

CREATION

This project was mainly an exploration of 3D modeling, as after much conference with the directing board they preferred a constant shape among all three placement awards. I began with a rough model of the placard

After submitting the draft piece to the board, feedback was received and the design was tweaked. This included features from the font and size, to the layers of depth within the piece.

The final placards were printed and sanded, giving a smooth final finish. This however did not leave me satisfied, as it felt the letters did not pop enough to the eye.

This problem was solved by adding a layer of acrylic paint to the letters, matching the chamber's logo. The feedback on this decision was very well received, and the awards were ready to hand out at the event

SHOWCASE

While fundamentally more simple, the opportunity to design and submit my own creation into a beloved hometown event, with my project being given as an award of high status was more than enough satisfaction!
